very nice, i will be trying this definately
You will be making something like:
In this tutorial, I will be teaching you how to import your Photoshop designs into 3DS Max, and making that logo 3D. Also, you will learn about a certain type of material editor - Green Copper. Lets get started
You Will Need:
- Font Creator
- Adobe Photoshop
- 3DS Max
http://www.high-logic.com/fontcreator.html
www.Adobe.com/Photoshop
Autodesk.com/3ds-Max
---
How you obtain these three programs is not my problem or concern.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) In Photoshop, create a new document. (1000x1000) <- Preferably.
2) In Photoshop, make the background white. Then, change your foreground to black.
3) In Photoshop, Select the Brush Tool. (B)
4) In Photoshop, Use your Brush Tool to create whatever you want to become 3D.
5) In Photoshop, Go to File > Save As > Save it as a .PNG
Now: It should look something like this...
-
Now, Switch to Font Creator.
6) Delete any unwanted font "Charactors" (Example: "!, :, $, *, &, ect...)
7) Right Click the Charactor you want to "edit", and click: "IMPORT IMAGE".
Should look like this:
8) Click "LOAD..." > And open your picture.
9) Click "GENERATE" and the image should load up into your program.
Should look like this:
10) Go to: File > Save As --- And save it as a .ttf
-
Now, install the font you've just created onto your computer.
-
Switch programs to 3DS Max.
11) Use the Text tool in 3DS Max, and while using your font, and type the charactor you've edited.
Should like something like this... (PERSPECTIVE VIEW)
12) Bevel it. So go to MODIFY > MODIFIER LIST > BEVEL
BEVEL SETTINGS:
Level 1- Height: 5. Outline: 0.
Level 2- Heigh: .25 . Outline: -.25 .
Your settings should look something like this...
--------
*The next step will be a very important step torwards the look of the design. It is a tutorial about the material editor I used. You may wish to continue this tutorial to have a green copper look added to your project, or you can go on your own.
TUTORIAL #2-
1) Go to RENDERING > Render Setup
2) Scroll all the way down to "ASSIGN RENDERER"
3) Click the "..." Icon which is next to "PRODUCTION"
Example:
4) A Box should appear. Choose "mental ray Renderer" and hit "OK". The x out of the box.
5) Pull up your material editor (Shortcut- "M")
6) Click on any circle, and hit "STANDARD".
Should look like this...
7) Another box should appear. Choose "Arch & Design (mi)" and hir "OK"
8) Under "(Select A Template)" choose "COPPER".
9) Under "Main Material Parameters" there should be two bornw colors. Change them to a nice green color.
Should look like this...
10) Just drag the circle to your "Text" and when you render it, the green copper material should appear.
The material should look something like this...
11) Go to "RENDERING > Envirnment" and change the "Background" color to white.
-----
Again, the final result should be something like this:

Just a little note that can replace steps 3 & 4. If you don't have any brushes like shown or want a similarly-styled one but can't find an exact match, there's an easy two-step process to make one yourself.
Just use the selection box to create strips of horizontal and vertical black lines, until you have something like this...
and then go filter -> distortion -> Polar Co-ordinates and select "rectangular to polar" to get something like this
I suppose you can just experiment with thickness and size but there you go anyway
A nice tutorial too, animating the separate parts would be cool!
why dont you build buildings in photoshop and import them into
Couldnt do that because its originally 2D
why not do it like drafting? Draw the walls like lines thickness and all then import it as a font and raise the walls up on X
